The viticultural history of the Ardèvol family in the village of Porrera dates back to the 13th century. Selling primarily to cooperatives in bulk -and a brief hiatus in the 1930s to meet the demands of hazelnut production- in 1995 the family decided to return to viticulture and founded Celler Ardèvol.
Josep Ardèvol -patriarch of the family who passed in 2020- wanted to create wines that expressed a purity of the Priorat terroir and work in harmony with nature. Working alongside a local enologist, together, decided to farm and make the wines biodynamically. Josep believed that each and every interaction with the vines had a direct impact. A high-touch, low-intervention approach maintained both in the farming and wine making. The wines each undergo gentle pressings, extended macerations and aged in a selection of lightly toasted, fine grain French oak barrels.
Today, one of Josep Ardèvol’s twin sons, Max Ardèvol, has taken the reins and continues to work alongside the same local enologist as his father, continuing the centuries old family legacy and elevating his father’s high standards to even greater heights.
The Ardèvol family own a total of 10 hectares across three main vineyards:
La Coma d’en Romeu: 400 meters altitude, facing south and south east, this vineyard is mainly planted with Cabernet Sauvignon
El Menescal – Mas d’en Pubill: 450 meters altitude, south facing slope, planted with Syrah and Garnacha
Mas d’en Caçador: 500 meters altitude, north facing and planted with Merlot
