‘Loureiro’ means ’laurel’, and the aroma of Loureiro wines resembles that of laurel flowers, as well as orange blossom, acacia and lime blossom, overlaying appley, peachy fruits. Loureiro vineyards, throughout the Vinho Verde region, have become almost extinct. It is said that the Loureiro grape originated in the valley of the River Lima, towards the north of the VR Minho/DOC Vinho Verde region.
Loureiro was traditionally blended with Arinto (Pedernã) and Alvarinho or Trajadura. Nowadays, it is often bottled as a single varietal because it is appealing on its own, with complementing subtle aromas and exceptional freshness and acidity. Aguafuerte Loureiro is only produced in a good vintage year.
Loureiro is also found in the region of Galicia in the northwest of Spain; it is also known as Arinto. Aguafuerte is an etching, and the Aríos Aguafuerte label has the look and feel of an etching.
